Dating back to William Warre, who was born in India in 1706 where his ancestors were part of the East India Company, the history of the Warre family in Portugal is rich. In 1729, he ventured to Portugal and became a partner in Messrs. Clark, Thornton & Warre, an export company specializing in Portuguese wine. By the end of the 18th century, Warre’s had established itself as a prominent player in the Port wine trade. His grandson, another William Warre, not only expanded the business but also played a key role in restoring Portugal’s independence with his military contributions.

The Symington family's roots in the Port trade go back over 350 years, spanning 13 generations. Descended from Andrew James Symington and Beatrice Atkinson, who wed in Oporto in 1891, the Symingtons have been deeply involved in the industry. Andrew James, who arrived from Scotland in 1882, joined Warre & Co. in 1905 and eventually took full ownership in 1908. Currently, six Symington family members, including five from the 13th generation, play active roles in the day-to-day management of Warre’s, reflecting the family's enduring dedication to the business.

From vineyards to winemaking and bottling, every step of the production process of Warre’s Port involves a member of the Symington family.
